The class assignment was to use charcoal to draw a ribbon. We were given black paper, a white charcoal pencil, and a piece of ribbon. The objective of the assignment was to bring out the highlights. I love working with charcoal and using it as a medium excites me. It turned out great and the only issue I had with the assignment was drawing the ribbon to make it look like it was overlapping at some points. I really hope that we get to continue to use charcoal throughout the semester, I love it!
Our assignment was to draw a sheet and capture the lights and darks using charcoal. I really like charcoal as a medium, it gives a certain smoothness when used correctly. I had a little trouble at the start getting the wrinkles just right. I either had to much light or not enough dark, it was very frustrating. I grew so irritated with trying to make it the right shade of gray, I forgot to look at the big picture. Also, the lack of realism in the folds were really putting me over the edge.
Luckily with some help from my table mate, I picked up pretty fast on what I needed to do to make this assignment a success. She showed me a technique on how to make the wrinkles include a shadows so they would look more realistic. She also told me that if I try to draw what I see and not what I think its suppose to look like. After I got the hang of things the sheet started to come together and it looked great. I love how it turned out, the buckets could use some work though. If I had added a little bit more white to make it a tad lighter, it would have been perfect to me. Overall, I was glad to reunite with charcoal again and make a wonderful piece. |
